This I Believe . . . Religion.

I'm not going to tell you I'm an atheist - I'm not - I'm just not sure what God is or what "God" even means and, more importantly than that, I don't really care. So, let's get this out of the way right up front, ok? I'm not an atheist. Once more for the people in the back: I. Am. Not. An. Atheist.

My feelings on this come down to one thing which I consider to be an infallible, basic, and fundamental truth: no thing can come from nothing. That is as committed as I'm going to get on this topic . . . though, from time to time, you may catch me playing a little Devil's Advocate on some of the finer points of theology. Atheists: get thee behind me with your claims and citations of all the countless dead because of religion. Religionists: I call shenanigans on your acceptance of blind faith. If either camp can offer me one bit of evidence - concrete and absolute - then I will vote with your camp but we all know that's not going to happen.

I prefer logic and logic tells me that there must have been a creator (please note the little c) but, beyond that, who's to say? Logic also tells me that though its possible that one denomination is right, the possibility that that might be true must be pretty slim.

But logic also tells me that compassion is necessary for us all to flourish. I don't think God is necessary for us to have something that passes for morality. I don't need a fear of God for me to treat people kindly or to keep me from committing atrocities and I have a sort of faith that the rest of the world doesn't either. I think God is a useful thing for some people to believe in but a belief in God is only a means to an end. (That "end" being a world that spins itself apart into oblivion.)
